Ahead of the March 23 rerun governorship elections in Kano State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has assured his teeming supporters of emerging victorious in the forthcoming polls, which was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This was contained in a statement signed by Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa the Spokesperson to PDP Gubernatorial Candidate.
The statement said the election was declared inconclusive due to the cancellation of many polling units.
Recall, that INEC on Monday declared the gubernatorial election in Kano as inconclusive as the PDP candidate scored 1,014,474, leading the incumbent Governor and candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who scored 987,819 votes.
The PDP candidate leads with the margin of 26,565 votes while 2,155,128 was recorded as Valid and 49,761 votes were rejected.
According to the electoral body, declaring the election as inconclusive was in line with section 26 of the Electoral act that said if the number of cancelation of votes cast is beyond the margin between the winner and the looser then their shall be a rerun.
The rerun election will be held in 234 Polling units scattered across 88 registration areas (wards) in the 30 affected local government areas.
INEC cancelled 141,694 votes in about 196 polling units, citing cases of over voting, violence and card reader failure. The cancelled areas also included 62 polling units of Gama ward in Nassarawa local government area where police arrested Kano Commissioner for Local government Murtala Sule Garo and one Lamin Sani for allegedly snatching and destroying result sheets.
Kabir, who is a member of the highly influential Kwankwasiyya group, a movement led by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso appeal for calm, ahead of the rerun election.
’We call on all supporters to remain calm, we are known to be peace lovers and so we shall remain, as we are very sure of victory during the rerun”, he said
‘’Our supporters should not forget that PDP is already leading in the last count of the election and interestingly, the bye election would take place in the strongest areas of our party.’
We urged everyone to keep hope alive on our quest to rescue Kano from the hands of corrupt leaders and agents of distraction.
It appealed to people in the affected areas to come out en mass to cast their votes in favour of PDP, We will Insha Allah emerge victorious after the rerun to restore the lost glory of Kano.
